Did you know that North East Germany has the highest rate of self-described Atheists in the world? 3.64 million people inhabit the central district of Berlin itself- yet only 2% are estimated to attend a church on Sunday morning!
The intense ruin of World War 2 follow by communist occupation eliminated almost all religion from what was once the geographical home of the Protestant Reformation. Like in much of Europe today, Christianity is seen by many as a relic of the past, a tradition with little relevance for the modern day. Many people fill the spiritual void with humanistic moralism, while others pull from various spiritualities to create an eclectic system of beliefs.
At a population of 4.5 million people in its entirety, Berlin is the most populous city in the EU. It is a hub of technology, commerce, and the arts (there are 138 museums and 400 art galleries alone!), as well as history and culture. Immigrants from all over the world come to Berlin, including large populations of Turkish, Palestinian, Polish, Indian, and now Ukrainian, people groups.
Envision is the Christian & Missionary Alliance’s development program for individuals wishing to serve cross-culturally long term. Teams are placed in central cities around the world with the intent of both assisting local church based activities and providing valuable overseas training for future missionaries.
While in Berlin, I will have the opportunity to work in various ministries that the Envision team runs. These include a program based in the Arts, service projects, working with youth, refugee ministry & local church partnerships.
